Reading in Year 2
The expectation in Year 2 is that children will read for 15 minutes a day at home. This could be listening to your child read, a shared read where you take it in turns to read a little bit, or you could read to your child. Please record this in their reading record, which is checked on a Friday.
2 phonics books will come home on a Friday after the children have read them for a week in school. Those are then swapped the following Friday for the new ones, so please remember to bring these back.
Children who are on accelerated reader will bring home books on their reading level to quiz on once they have finished the book. This focuses on comprehension of what they are reading, so they can understand texts in detail and develop their vocabulary skills.
All children in Year 2 have guided reading sessions in school where we read a text or an extract from a text and identify the key information and answer questions on it. Asking your child questions about what they are reading at home can help with this.
Your child will read to an adult every week in their daily phonics/reading sessions and also will be heard on a 1:1 basis every two weeks.
If you have any further questions about reading, please do not hesitate to ask.
