It is always helpful to think about RUCSAC if a word problem seems a little confusing!

Some questions might require you to do two jobs:

Year 4 make 273 cakes. Year 3 make 172. They have 34 left at the end. How many did they sell?

First of all, I need to work out how many cakes were made altogether.

273 + 172 = 445

To find out how many were sold, I need to take 34 away from the total amount.

445 - 34 =411

Be careful

Make sure you understand what the question is asking you to do. Check the terminology here:

If you are stuck, draw a picture or do some working out!

Remember change is the amount of money you receive back after paying with a larger amount of money.

English

Join me in our zoom session today to discuss different sentence structures.

There are 4 main types of sentences:

Punchy (1 or 2 words to add drama)

Short (3 or 4 words)

Compound (2 main clauses joined by a co-ordinating conjunction. Both clauses make sense on their own)

Coordinating Conjunctions Made Simple with FANBOYS!

Complex (2 clauses, one of these is a main clause and makes sense on its own. The other is a subordinate clause and does not make sense on its own. They are joined with a subordinating conjunction and normally have a comma.)

Your job today is to write a letter to Miss Stubberfield, so she knows a little more about you before you join Year 5. Try to use lots of different sentence structures.

If I was doing a letter, I would use the following paragraphs:

  • Describe yourself- what makes you different to everyone else in the class? What are your hobbies and interests?
  • What are your favourite subjects? Which subjects do you not enjoy as much? Why?
  • What are you looking forward to in Year 5?
  • What are you nervous about?

I would recommend doing it in your neatest handwriting. We can collect them in on Tuesday and I will pass them onto Miss Stubberfield later in the week.

Year 4 self-isolation Sportsday! (We will not have a Zoom)

Unfortunately, we won’t get a chance to do show off our skills in our annual sports day this year. But ……  why not bring Sports Day into your household?

Here are lots of ideas which you might want to try out at home. Use the challenge sheet to record who wins each activity within your household.  Please don’t feel you have to do every challenge. See which ones you and your family would like to have a go at! You might have to wait for a time when people are free! If no one is able to compete, you could record your results and then try to beat your scores.

Choose a referee who will be in charge of recording the points and has the power to deduct one point if someone isn’t showing good sportspersonship. There is a certificate template here too, so you might want to do decorate it and then hold your own award ceremony at the end!

The main rule is to have FUN!

There is a quiz, to test your sports knowledge! Click on the link and see how much you know about sports. The questions are very varied- so don’t panic if you have to guess one! Please don’t write your own name of the quiz. Instead, write your initials.

Here are some other (Olympic themed ideas) for your afternoon: .

  • Choreograph a dance to perform at the opening / closing ceremony of the Games.
  • Choose one of the Olympic sports and try to improve your skills. Record your progress using data and / or video to track your improvements.
  • Create a poster that teaches competitors about good sportsmanship while they are taking part in the Games.
