Accelerated Reader

This is an online tool which helps school manage and monitor children’s independent reading. Children are able to take a short ‘quiz’ on books that they have read. Passing the quiz gives an indication whether a child has understood what they have read.

It is introduced to children in Year Two, and is used as a tool to assess and engage the children. It allows children to be set a level (ZPD) of reading book that is appropriate, yet challenging. We use Accelerated Reader to closely monitor what children are – or are not – reading. This enables us to be able to work and talk to all children about their reading – suggesting new books, giving encouragement or supporting parents. We are able to use the points system embedded within it to motivate children to read and reward children for doing so.
