Today we will be learning about adding fractions. I know you know that we have to keep the denominator the same.

Please have a go at 'Dots and dashes' of Unit 9 in your purple spelling book. Top tip: there are a lot of split digraphs/, magic ‘e’s. You can check your answers below.

This week, we will be creating non-chronological reports (fact files) about Mount Everest. You did a bit of research last week, so hopefully you might know some facts already! I have also included lots of inofrmation in my PowerPoint below you. There is a template below which you might want to use. There are also example fact files for you to gain inspiration from. I have attached impressive sentence starers which might help your sentences sounds a bit more formal. We will be writing two paragraphs each day.

The job of a non-choronological is to teach the reader about something. It has got to be formal and informative. You should try to use facts and statistics (numbers) to back up your ideas. By the end of the week, you should have the following features:

Paragraph 1:

What is it?

Can you explain what a mountain is?
Where is it? Can you explain where the Himalayas are?
How tall is it? Can you compare it to something – e.g. how many empire state buildings?
How old is it?

Why is there less oxygen?
What equipment should climbers bring?

Topic

Knowing that we are learning about Mount Everest, what do you think this man is famous for?

1953 was a big year for Mount Everest. After 50 million years, at 11.30am on 28th May, something happened.

Two now famous explorers reached the summit of the highest land on earth.

Sir Edmund Hillary was a well known explorer and mountain climber. He was the first person to climb Mount Everest along with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. He was born on July 20, 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand. His complete name was Edmund Percival Hillary. He completed his first major climb in 1939 when he reached the peak of Mount Ollivier. After he finished school, he took up beekeeping as a profession. This job allowed him to continue his mountain climbing.

Activity:

Find out all you can about either Sir Edmund Hillary or Tenzing Norgay (his Sherpa) about the adventure in 1953. You can present your information in any way you like. Maybe a poster? Or PowerPoint? If you are stuck for ideas, you could use the template below and consider:
