Welcome to Year 4's class page!
This term we are learning about the Ancient Egyptians. The first lesson saw the children plane crash into Egypt and successfully role play what they might have seen or felt. Since then, we have had lots of fun, making Lego pyramid pencil pots, mummifying a real life fish and planting seeds to test whether Ancient Egyptians would have been able to use their landscape to grow crops.
In maths we have been learning how to use the multiplication grid in order to work out HTU x U questions. The children have worked really hard on this and are now trying to apply their knowledge to word problems. We have started to take part in tables speed tests every Friday morning. So far our class record is 3 minutes and 52 seconds! It would be really helpful if children could practice their times tables at home on a regular basis, so that they can work out multiplication problems out even quicker! Here are some fun games which might be handy:
In literacy, we have learnt about kennings, haikus and performance poems. We have some budding poets in the class, so watch this space! We performed our poems with instruments, in an 'X-Factor' style concert! Everyone got really involved and spoke very confidently in their roles.
In spellings, we have been learning about prefixes: mis, un, in, dis and auto. We have also learnt about the suffix '-sure'. Next half term we are going to have a big focus on spellings, and the words that are being learnt in the classroom will be sent home to practice.
The children should be bringing their reading logs into school every day after reading at home each evening and completing a small comment. The children are set homework on a Monday, which should be returned on the Friday of the same week.
